A diesel technician repairs and maintains diesel engines and heavy-duty pickups: fuel systems, turbochargers, emissions systems and the electronics that run them. Stores that sell heavy-duty trucks or service fleets need at least one.

When a store needs one: mid-size stores and up. Pay: $56,990 to $78,060 a year.

What to look for in a Diesel Technician

  • Ask which diesel engines and platforms they know best. Engines and emissions systems differ by brand.
  • Ask about emissions diagnosis: diesel particulate filters, EGR and SCR systems are a large part of modern diesel work.
  • Ask about ASE A9 (light vehicle diesel) or T-series (medium and heavy truck) certifications, or factory diesel training.
  • Ask whether they have done fleet work.

How the pay plan usually works

Diesel techs are usually paid flat rate or hourly, often at a higher rate than gas techs because of the training and tools the work requires. Steady fleet work can support a weekly hours guarantee.
